Goose Down Comforter
A true down comforter made of goose down is what everyone wants, what everyone assumes they're buying, but often get
something else. Its easy to be tricked into buying something that is filled with a synthetic material or a combination of down and feathers.
We'd like to educate you on what to look for and why true goose down is the best option.
Goose down particles are tiny, and must be enclosed in a down comforter cover made from
high-thread-count cloth. Some people are allergic to true down so they choose to buy synthetic, but if you don't have a reaction to it then focus
on getting the right fill material. If you need hypo allergenic material there are hypoallergenic comforters made from a goose down blend that
are tested by allergy doctors and guaranteed to be allergy-free for 10 years and sometimes more.
The Facts
- Where does it come from? Down is formed under the outer feather layer of a goose or duck.
- Goose down works better than feathers do, because feathers have the tendency to squash easily and are generally heavier overall, whereas
goose down does not squash and is much more lightweight.
- True down has little to no odor.
- Goose down comforters are warmer to sleep under, because the goose down clusters have dozens of soft, fine filaments.
- Down comforters with high loft are very warm, even though the amount of goose down used is less than the amount other down comforters
use.
- Down comforters that are 90-95% white goose down with the remaining percentage of fill composed of tiny goose feathers.
We don't want to scare you away from synthetic filled or blended filling, we just want you to be sure that you aren't paying 100% goose down
prices for something that is blended. There are some very nice blended mixtures that make for very luxurious comforters, its all in the
stitching, fill power and overall manufacturer quality.
Is it safe to buy a comforter from an online retailer?
Yes. In fact, we've done it. Even years ago when the internet was "new" we found an excellent deal on a great comforter from Pacific Coast. It
has lasted us over 10 years and is still used. If you are still uneasy then we recommend you do some hands on research at your favorite retail or
department store and then look to see if the price (including shipping) is any better from the online retailers. It's usually best to get a hands
on feel for your chosen comforter because you'll be able to tell if you think it's luxurious enough and if you can get away with a cheaper thread
count in order to save money and just get a really nice cover instead.
